Mineralogical and magnetic characterization of Olmec ilmenite …
This study focuses on the sourcing of non-local artifacts, made from iron–titanium (ilmenite) oxide mineral and iron-ores, found in large quantities in the archeological excavations, in order to shed light on Early Preclassic trade.

Ilmenite differs most from silicates in the region below ~500 nm: it shows a reflectance increase versus decrease toward shorter wavelengths for silicates, as well as diagnostic Ti/Ti-Fe maxima or minima. Thus, detection of ilmenite in mixtures is best accomplished by including the UV region in spectral analysis.

21.17. Results of x-ray phase analysis of this concentrate revealed that the main phase is ilmenite (FeO∙TiO 2 ). The presence of phases Fe 2 O 3 ∙3TiO 2 (much) and 3Fe 2 O 3 ∙3TiO 2 (little) and the absence of magnetic susceptibility of these specimens point to the alteration capacity (leucoxenization) of ilmenite.

The various properties of ilmenite such as high density, paramagnetism and electrical conductivity have enabled the gravity separation, high-intensity magnetic separation (HIMS), electrostatic separation or a combination of all three to be conventional methods for processing of ilmenite ores.

apparent that the haemo-ilmenite crystals contain two magnetic components, a. relatively soft component with a coercive force of about 100 Oe and a hard com- ponent with a coercive force of about 1400 Oe. The separated inferred curves for. these two components have been sketched in dotted and dashed lines in figure 4.

ilmenite is also mixed with impurities, it must be separated to obtain the high grade ilmenite. At present, the main separation methods include flotation [3,4], gravity [5], magnetic separation [6,7], and so on. For example, decanoic acid was found to be an effective collector, to float ilmenite in the strongly acidic pulp. The combination of ...

Based on ilmenite macrocryst compositional distributions, the study of heterogeneity in polygranular ilmenite nodules, and ilmenite in sheared xenoliths, we propose a three stage formation and (re-)crystallization history of ilmenite macrocrysts and megacrysts: 1) primitive asthenospheric melt; 2) lithospheric contaminated melt and 3) re ...

Electrical conductivities of the olivine–ilmenite systems with various contents of ilmenite (VIlm = 4, 7, 10, 11 and 15 vol%) and pure ilmenite aggregates were measured using a complex impedance spectroscopic technique at 1.0–3.0 GPa and 773–1273 K. Electrical conductivities of the olivine–ilmenite systems increased with increasing ...
